Great result at last for us. This was supposed to be a difficult game and it sure proved to be one. Despite us scoring the opener in the first minute, we never had the game under control. Still with some luck and some good keeping we snatched a win.
We started brightly and Rosicky started off a move that was continued by Song who delivered an excellent cross for Chamakh to head home. This should have been the start of good things to come as Wenger gave the thumbs up for the goal.
We were having plenty of possession in the opening half hour as we continued to attack the Wolves goal. Arshavin had a chance to make it 2 nil when he was through on goal but the keeper denied him. Hanhemann made another good reaction save to deny Fabregas a scoring opportunity.
Wolves on the other hand slowly settled down and continued to look for goals. Doyle headed a free kick over the bar and Milijas had a long range shot. Fabianski was called into action when he cleared the ball after it had looped off Squillaci and was heading for goal. The final 15 minutes of the first half were very tense as Wolves had some good scoring opportunities.
We however survived and headed in to the break with a goal advantage.
The wolves returned in the second half more improved. They went again close to equalizing. Wilshere slipped at the wrong moment and the ball was squared towards the danger area but Sagna made a timely block to deny them. Doyle than had a curling shot that was heading towards goal but Fabianski deflected it for a corner. From the corner Rosicky cleared the ball off the line as Spearman guided it past Fabianski.
We survived the early onslaught from Wolves and started to look for the second goal which should have come when Fabregas had only the keeper to beat but his shot went wide. Arshavin hit the post soon after. At the other end our defenders and keeper were doing theirs to keep the Wolves from scoring. Djourou had the chance to seal the game when he pounced on a loose ball only to be deflected of the goal line and out for a corner.
In between all this there were a few bad tackles. Karl Henry on Arshavin, Milijas on Song and Fabregas on Stephen Ward for which Fabregas was booked.
The last minutes saw Fabianski make another good save to his left as Chamakh sealed the game. Fabregas found him with a lobbed ball and Chamakh made no mistake as he shot the ball past the keeper to end a thrilling match.
It wasn’t the best of performances from us but we did get the result which matters in the end.
The point of concern is that we fail to take our chances to seal games of early and it gives more confidence to the opposition. We also give too much space and too many opportunities to the opposition. Had it not been for Fabianski we would not have had the three points. Fabianski made saves after saves to deny Wolves from equalizing. Our back line also made aplenty of blocks and clearances as we survived a determined onslaught from Wolves.
Coming to Chamakh, he was poor in his last two games and he replied with a bang. Two very well taken goals and it just shows that this man can score; he only needs to pounce on the chances he gets.
The ref however was a moron as he allowed the Wolves to commit foul after foul and didn’t book them. Henry’s foul on Arshavin was a booking. A yellow if not red. He got away with it whereas on the other hand Fabregas was booked for his foul. It was the correct decision but my point is the ref should have been consistent. There were plenty of bad tackles by the Wolves but they got away every time. I know that the whole media will talk about the foul committed by Fabregas and the ones committed by wolves will not even see the day light. Still I wouldn’t want to see an Arsenal player committing such a foul.
As for the overall team, the spirit was visible as they clearly wanted to win this win. It will really help to improve the confidence. We have yet another win away from home and another clean sheet. We just need our home performance to improve.
Man Utd have drawn their game which allows the deficit from them to be reduced to a point whereas Chelsea have won theirs. Still it is a great result and if we continue to grind out results like these we will be in the race till the end. Although it would be better if we kill the games early.
