Points Dropped or Gained, Arsenal has Improved

After the Sunderland draw, many negative and skeptical things have been said about Arsenal. As every person is entitled to their own view, I can do nothing about that. Although, I decided to take a look at how Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United fared last season until now in the league. What I found is interesting:

(For the relegated and promoted teams, I have taken Burnley as Blackpool, West Bromwich Albion as Portsmouth and Newcastle as Hull City.)

Arsenal:

This season we have played Liverpool, Blackburn and Sunderland away and Blackpool and Bolton at home. Results are:

Won: 3

Draw: 2

Lost: 0

Points: 11

Goals for: 14

Goals Against: 4

Now the return of the same fixtures from last season

Won: 3

Lost: 2

Draw: 0

Points: 9

Goals For: 10

Goals Against: 7

From looking at the stats, we have done better than last season. We have taken more points, scored more times and have conceded less resulting in us converting the losses last time into a win and draw. The only downside is that last season we won away at Liverpool but this season we have drawn over there. The most important thing is we are unbeaten yet.

Chelsea:

Chelsea, this season have played West Bromwich Albion. Stoke City and Blackpool at home and West Ham United and Wigan Athletic away. Results are:

Won: 5

Lost: 0

Draw: 0

Points: 15

Goals For: 21

Goals Against: 1

Last season, the same fixtures yielded

Won: 3

Lost: 1

Draw: 1

Points: 13

Goals For: 16

Goals Against: 3

Chelsea have also improved. They have won all their fixtures and scored more goals than last time. They have also conceded only once.

Manchester United:

Manchester United have played Liverpool, West Ham United and Newcastle United at home and Fulham and Everton away. Result is:

Won: 3

Lost: 0

Draw: 2

Points: 11

Goals For: 14

Goals Against: 7

The same fixtures, last season, resulted in

Won: 4

Lost: 1

Draw: 0

Points: 12

Goals For: 13

Goals Against: 5

Manchester United’s start hasn’t been good. They have got fewer points than the last season they got from the same fixtures. The plus side can be that they are unbeaten. Though, they have conceded more goals.

Now, a look at the results of the opening 5 games for the three sides from last season.

Arsenal:

Won: 3

Lost: 2

Draw: 0

Points: 9

Goals For: 17

Goals Against: 8

League position (After 5 Matches): 6th

Chelsea:

Won: 5

Lost:

Draw: 0

Points: 15

Goals For: 11

Goals Against: 3

League position (After 5 Matches): 1st

Manchester United:

Won: 4

Lost: 1

Draw: 0

Points: 12

Goals For: 11

Goals Against: 3

League position (After 5 Matches): 2nd

Now from the stats it can be seen that Arsenal is the only team that has improved in terms of getting more from their first 5 fixtures. Last season we had lost twice till now. This season we are unbeaten yet and there are fewer goals scored against us. Chelsea’s outcome is the same as last season in terms of points with the plus that they have scored more goals. Manchester United on the other hand, while still without a loss, has a return of fewer points and they have conceded more goals.

So it can be concluded that we have made an improved start from last season though for Chelsea it has been another perfect start. Chelsea at the moment is the team that is to be beaten and they are looking strong, though we can be stronger if we play to our strengths and kill off the matches early. We have a much improved defence this season and Almunia has also stepped up a gear since the first match at Anfield. We have plenty of depth in the squad along with the quality to challenge for the big honours. Even with the injuries suffered, we have a quality player for the cover at each position. Koscielny, Squlliaci and Chamakh have all been impressive so far along with the whole team.

There are a lot of matches to come, where points can be dropped by all teams, with Chelsea to play Manchester City next weekend and then us the weekend after. We don’t have to drop silly points or otherwise it will be very hard to catch Chelsea if they continued with their form.We just don’t have to take any game lightly and continue with the form with which we have started and this May we might see some silver in our hands. And stay away from the doom-mongers and Anti-Arsenal news as far as possible.

Gunners for the title! Thoughts!
