Blackburn: 1 Mame diouf (26)
Arsenal: 2 Walcott (20), Arshavin (51)
Arsenal survived Blackburn’s assault to secure the three points and have their revenge on last season’s defeat at Ewood Park.
It was Walcott who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when he controlled the pass from Van Persie and hit a fine shot from a tight angle.
But the match wasn’t in Arsenal’s control. Both teams had chances to take the lead. Blackburn was winning lots of throw-ins and as usual the long throws were troubling Arsenal’s back. Back that with Paul Robinson’s long kicks to the danger area, in the first 45 minutes the tactics of Blackburn were effective. Fabregas denied Blackburn to take the lead when he cleared the ball off the goal line with his head when Ryan Nelson headed in a corner. Diaby’s shot was also cleared off the line early on in the match by Vince Grella.
It was some bad defending from Clichy that led Mame Diouf to get his first goal for Blackburn as the score was equalized after 26 minutes. Koscielny fell behind El-Hadgi Diouf as he accelerated past him and passed the ball to Mame Diouf who tapped in with Clichy unaware of his presence.
Arsenal lost Van Persie to an ankle injury and he was substituted after half an hour. The rest of the half was the same with Blackburn attacking on set pieces and throw-ins and Arsenal trying to create chances.
Arsenal took the lead in the beginning of the second half through Arsahvin which they managed to keep till the end. Sagna, after running down on the right flank, found Fabregas in the danger area and his shot was unfortunately blocked by Walcott but it fell to Arshavin who made no mistake to put Arsenal ahead.
Arsenal had more control on the game in the second half. Walcott had a shot from range but it went just over the bar. 10 minutes from time David Dunn got the chance to equalize for Blackburn but his weak shot went straight to the keeper. Wilshere had an open chance to seal off the game in injury time but his shot was saved by the keeper.
