Arsenal are finally set to sign a defender. It was reported that Sebastien Squillaci had flown to London for a medical at Arsenal FC yesterday. A deal might be signed today and it will cost around £6.5 million.
The 30 year old French defender was missing from the team of Sevilla last week for their match against Sporting Braga which was a sign that a deal was going to happen.
He has spent most of his career in Ligue 1 most notably for Lyon, where he was the first choice centre back, and Monaco. He established himself on the European stage when with Monaco he reached the Champions League final only to lose to FC Porto. In 2008 he signed a three year contract with Sevilla. He also has 20 caps for the French team.
A new defender is what we need right now and this signing shows that this season is moving in the right direction for Arsenal. After losing 3 defenders, our backline was severely handicapped and he is going to add depth to our defence.
What we need now is a top class keeper. A new improved bid for Mark Schwarzer was made in the last week and there are news too that he has failed the medical, I don’t know how true this is, but Wenger is trying his best to strengthen the team.
In the coming week we will find out about it. Till then!
