Liverpool 1 (Ngog 46’)
Arsenal 1 (Reina OG 90+)
The first match of the season for Arsenal ended in a one all draw with both Liverpool and Arsenal ending up with 10 men.
The match started slowly for both teams as each tried to control the midfield. Arsenal had the early possession but Liverpool had the better chances. Johnson’s shot was tipped over the bar by Almunia and Clichy made a goal line clearance when Ngog headed in a Gerrard corner.
Joe Cole’s premiership debut for Liverpool ended in sending off when he was shown a straight red card on his lunge on Laurent Koscielny late in the first half.
Arsenal started the 2nd half with a man up, but still Liverpool took the lead first when Ngog scored from a tight angle in the 46th min. He was fed in by Mascherano after gathering a loose ball near the box.
Liverpool took the initiative after this and had a good spell. Skrtel and Ngog both going close with headers from Gerrard free kicks.
Arsenal tried their luck at the other end with Vermaelen heading wide. Walcott had a curling free kick saved by Reina. Rosicky’s effort was tipped over by Reina again after a good run into the box and a quick one-two with van Persie.
The game was leveled when Rosicky curled in a cross for Chamakh and the ball bounced off Reina into his own net after it had rebounded from the post. The drama didn’t end there. Gerrard had a free kick saved by Almunia in injury time and Koscielny was sent off after getting his 2nd yellow.
